Taking the Next Step: From Recreational to Competitive Soccer

take the next step in your soccer journey with santa cruz united fc.
start your next soccer chapter
If your player loved their fall recreational season and is ready for more — more challenge, more learning, and more time on the ball — competitive soccer may be the perfect next step.
Santa Cruz United FC gives local players the chance to train with licensed coaches, play alongside other driven and committed teammates, and experience the excitement of NorCal Premier competition — all right here in Santa Cruz County.
1. What's the difference?
Recreational soccer focuses on fun, participation, and learning the basics of the game.
Competitive soccer builds on that foundation with more structured training, licensed coaching, and league competition where players are placed on teams based on readiness and development.

It’s the next step for players who want to train more often, be challenged, and experience soccer in a focused, team-driven environment — while still keeping the joy and love of the game at the heart of every session.
3. who it's for
Players who:

-
Love the game and want to keep improving
-
Are eager to further develop their technical soccer skills in a fun but focused training environment

-
Want to play with other talented and committed teammates who share their drive for the game
Competitive soccer isn’t just for the top players — it’s for those who are motivated, curious, and ready to take the next step in their development.
2. where we play
Santa Cruz United FC is a competitive soccer club, not a local league.
Our teams play in the NorCal Premier Soccer League — one of the most respected competitive leagues in Northern California.

NorCal provides a structured competition environment with divisions organized by age, level, and geography.
-
Foundation and Development teams are typically placed in regional divisions, keeping most games within Santa Cruz County and nearby areas like Morgan Hill or South San Jose.
-
Performance teams compete in NorCal’s State Premier and National Premier League (NPL) divisions, facing top clubs from across Northern California.

Santa Cruz United is proud to be recognized as an NPL member club, giving both our boys' and girls' programs access to elite National Premier League competition beginning at the U13 level.

Through our NorCal Premier affiliation, players develop locally while gaining exposure to some of the strongest clubs and events across Northern California and beyond.

Playing in NorCal gives our players the opportunity to grow through appropriate competition and experience high-quality soccer outside of traditional recreational leagues.
NORCAL Premier soccer
NorCal Premier Soccer is a prominent soccer organization in Northern California, dedicated to fostering the development of youth soccer in the region. It provides a comprehensive range of programs and competitions designed to enhance the skills and experiences of young soccer players.
national premier leagues
The National Premier Leagues (NPL) is a nationwide youth soccer league system in the United States, established to elevate the standard of competitive soccer and provide a structured pathway for player development. The NPL offers high-level competition for boys and girls, featuring clubs and teams that demonstrate a commitment to excellence in coaching, player performance, and overall club operations.
4. THE COMMITMENT

Competitive teams participate in the NorCal Premier League, with Performance teams competing at the ECNL RL, NPL and State Premier levels and the Foundation and Development teams competing at the Regional level.
5. how to join
Players typically join Santa Cruz United during annual tryouts in May, when teams are formed for the next soccer year (July–June).

However, players coming off the Fall Recreational Soccer season who are looking for a more challenging and committed soccer experience with like-minded teammates can attend Winter Tryouts.
Based on readiness and roster availability, players may:

-
Be added to existing teams for the Spring 2026 competitive season, or
-
Be invited to join our Spring Pathway to Competitive Soccer Program, designed to help prepare them for May tryouts and the start of the new competitive season in Fall 2026.
The Spring Pathway Program can also be done alongside Spring Recreational Soccer, giving players the best of both worlds — more touches, professional coaching, and early preparation for competitive play.
